Student Testimonials

‘Mrs. Haskell is a perceptive, considerate, and wholly dedicated private teacher and chamber coach. Having the privilege to study with her at the Chautauqua Institution School of Music was a transformative experience that immediately led me to improve. Not only did Mrs. Haskell help me to identify and work through my weaknesses, but she empowered me to focus my career goals and general musicianship as well—all in only a few lessons and multiple coachings over two weeks! I greatly value my time studying with Mrs. Haskell, an inspiring clarinetist, musician, educator, and human being.’  (Dylan - Mannes School of Music)

‘I am a professional musician; violinist, pianist, and ballet accompanist, and a filmmaker residing in Toronto. I first worked with Ms. Haskell during my time at The Chautauqua Institution in the summer of 2017. She was assigned to be the coach for our chamber group, which was selected to perform the Prokofiev Quintet. Being a string instrumentalist, it is usually more common to receive coachings from string quartet instrumentalists or pianists - but working with Ms. Haskell was just an absolute joy. Her love for the composition we worked on, combined with her warm-hearted spirit, unrivaled kindness, and professionalism has left such fantastic memories of our short time together during the Chamber Session. Ms. Haskell was able to effortlessly encourage and excite our chamber group, solidify our confidence in performing the quintet, and always did it with so much class and patience. Ever since my experience learning from Ms. Haskell, I have been itching to perform for her again, for she is such a rare example of an inspiring role model that every pre-professional musician should have the luxury of learning from. Thank you for all your advice, support, and enthusiasm, Diana! You will always be one of my favourite chamber coaches I've had the pleasure of working with.’ (Stelth - University of Toronto - Violin)

‘During my time at Chautauqua, working with Diana Haskell led to tremendous musical, technical and personal growth. Mrs. Haskell introduced to me an exercise to help my increase my articulation palette that I still use to this day, and it has helped me increase my control of my articulation. It is rare to find a teacher that cares as much as Mrs. Haskell does. Anyone would be lucky to have her as a teacher or mentor.’
(Tyler - Manhattan School of Music)

‘Diana Haskell is so special - she is able to create a wonderful balance between being a spiritual mentor and being an assertive clarinet teacher. Her vast experience of playing Eb clarinet professionally also gave us the opportunity to learn how to make the Eb clarinet an amazing auxiliary to play.’   (Laura - Eastman School of Music)

‘I enjoyed every moment with Ms. Haskell! The amount of individual attention we were given over two weeks was incredibly helpful because Mrs. Haskell was able to really know our playing ability.’   (Julia - DePaul University and UMKC)

‘Ms. Haskell is not only a great teacher but a phenomenal person and player. I loved every lesson with her because I was pushed hard every week. She really pushed me to get out of my box and to not be afraid to play out! She always makes the lessons fun with her charismatic personality, but has a good balance between work and fun. Overall, Ms. Haskell is a wonderful teacher, player, mentor, and person, and I would recommend her to anyone.’ (J., former high school student)

I studied under Diana Haskell for two years and grew immensely as a player and a person. When I began playing the clarinet I could not even play a C Major scale but by the end of my first year with her I performed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, among other significant pieces. I felt completely at ease while being constantly challenged studying under Diana Haskell. I learned to appreciate music and learning in a way that has changed my life forever. (E., former high school student)
